The timing of the founding of this school was no coincidence. 16 But in 1846, just a few years after the founding of the AIH, a small group of orthodox physicians had met in New York to discuss forming a national medical organization. In 1847 the group met in Philadelphia to draw up the constitution and a code of ethics for the American Medical Association (AMA). These efforts were part of a new sense of professionalism and were a way of trying to separate in the public mind orthodox physicians from the myriad other practitioners in the nineteenth-century American medical world.
